Where Is Munduk Located?

Munduk is a peaceful mountain village located in northern Bali. It is surrounded by stunning rainforests, waterfalls, rice terraces, and clove plantations. The traffic is much less congested and the views are breathtaking. this area is not as turisty as other areas in Bali which will ensure that you have a great and peaceful experience.

This hidden gem sits at an elevation of about 800–1,200 meters above sea level that is why it is cool and misty specially in the morning and nights.

How Far Is Munduk from Denpasar Airport?

Munduk is approximately 80 to 90 kilometers (about 2.5 to 3.5 hours) from Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS), depending on traffic and your mode of transport.

  • By car or private driver: This is the most comfortable option and allows you to stop at scenic spots along the way, it is also useful to book the taxi in advance and the fee can be a minimum of 700k IDR
  • By scooter: If you’re already in central Bali it is ok, however, it can be very steep in places and also is a long way so we do not recommend it.
  • Public transport is pretty much non existent, so we recommend you to book a cab in advance.

When is the best time to visit Munduk in Bali?

Temperature in Munduk, all year around by Weather and Climate

The best time to explore this hidden paradise is during the dry season from April to October, when the sky is clear. The temperatures range from 20°C to 28°C, offering a refreshing break from the tropical heat found in other parts of the island.

Because of its higher elevation, Munduk stays cool and peaceful year-round. it is ideal for hikers, yogis, photographers, and anyone wanting to escape the heat and crowds.

Where to Stay in Munduk?

Munduk has a fair amount of accommodation options to choose from. you can stay in luxury hotels, family villas or hostels by the beach. We prefer to stay in a Hotel in the jungle and be able to see all the beautiful views of the valley. We recommend you to look for something that will cover all or most of your meals, the transport is limited and the shops are very small.

We stay in a charming hotels on hillsides, offering panoramic views of the jungle and valley below. This hotel had all we needed including a drop off and pick up around in the town of Munduk and surrounding areas. They also offer a free yoga lesson every day in the morning and we found out there were some Tai- chi events celebrated in this hotel.

The views were amazing and the food outstanding. You can choose from American or Indonesian breakfast and they can accommodate your food to your needs. You can also taste the most exotic fruits and enjoy of drinks by the pool. They also took us to explore their garden, destinated to grow traditional and medicinal plants from the region.

This hotel included different service with a small fee, for example traditional Indonesian dance, traditional Indonesian massage, scooter rental and more.

5-Star Luxury Retreats

For those wanting a little more indulgence, there are eco-luxury resorts with infinity pools hanging over jungle cliffs, organic restaurants, and holistic spa treatments. The prices of this places are quite reasonable comparing to other 5 star hotels. You can have a full service and experience organic food and veggies, even locally produce coffee. We had an amazing Spa day with my mum at Munduk Moding Plantation, where we enjoyed of Thalasso foot bath, Aromatherapy, Body Massage, Coffee Body Scrub, Flower Petal Bath, Bali Tropical Facial and reflexology.

Getting Around Munduk: Adventure on the Road

The Roads and pathways in Munduk are in good to acceptable state, there isn’t too much traffic but some roads can be a bit steep. we did not see any public transport and the area and we highly recommend you to hire a driver for the day instead of using any apps.

  • Car Rental with Driver: The most convenient way to see the sights, especially if you’re doing a full day trip or traveling with family.
  • Scooter Rental: Adventurous travelers will love riding a scooter through the winding mountain roads surrounded by jungle, mist, and plantations.

There are plenty of activities that you can do in Munduk, specially being surrounded by nature and peace. You can visit the Waterfalls, Hot springs, Spas and Restaurants, we are sure you will find clean air and amazing food.

1. Munduk’s Waterfalls


There are three main waterfalls in Munduk including the Red Coral, Golden Valley, and Melanting Waterfalls. These waterfalls are pretty close to each other for you to visit in one day. The pathways are very clean and even though they can be a bit seep but there are steps that make the journey a bit easier. You will have to pay a small fee to enter. The entrance fee collected is used to support the community and maintain the place nice and clean. When we went to visit the waterfalls we saw lots of native insects and monkeys.

2. Munduk’s Hidden Hot Springs


We found the Banjar Hot springs hidden in the mountain. This is a set of three main hot springs pools by the river, they are well known for being therapeutic sulfur hot springs and healing bathing spot. There is plenty of space for you to park and lockers to save your clothes for a small fee. The pools are visited by thousands of people every year and you can also shower with the spring waters from the river. There are a couple of places where you can have something to eat and drink. Please keep hydrated and use footwear to prevent falls.

3. Visit the Brahmavihara-Arama Buddhist temple


The Brahmavihara-Arama Temple, Bali’s largest Buddhist monastery, offers peace, prayer flags, and panoramic views. There are not many tourists visiting the temple, which keeps it pristine and peaceful at all times. The temple has many steps and status where you can get to understand a bit more about the Buddhist tradition. You have the chance to feed the birds for a donation and take lots of pictures of the temples and the panoramic and exclusive views.

4. Jungle Spa & Massage

What’s better than a Balinese massage? A massage surrounded by jungle sounds and fresh mountain air. You’ll find local spas and hidden retreats offering authentic treatments at great prices. We had the pleasure to receive a massage by the local therapists. We enjoy of the nature around us, the magic of relaxation for our well being and the great culture of the local communities.

5. Yoga in the Forest


Bali is well known for its tranquility and yoga retreats. There was a chance to join the yoga class in the mornings every day at the hotel. We were able to admire the mist of the mountains, breath the clean and pure air, and getting one with the present moment. There are different places where you can practice yoga in Munduk even at the beach. We also practiced some Tai-chi and Chi-gong and we recommend you to explore different retreats and enjoy of the Balinese culture.
